Eye Allergies And Their Treatment :: By Rosa
10/12/09
Eye allergies are also known as “pink eyes.” If pink eye is caused by allergens then it is called “allergic conjunctivitis.”
It can be spread from person to person if it is caused by bacteria or viruses. If diagnosed quickly it’s not a serious health risk. Allergic conjunctivitis isn’t contagious.
Eye allergies are hereditary and when you see that your eyes are red, itch, watery, teary or burning then you may have eye allergies. An allergic reaction can occur when an allergen makes contact with your eyes and nose. Allergens are mainly in the air and they can be indoors as well as outdoors.
Outdoor airborne allergens include tree, grass and weed pollens. The most common indoor allergens are pet hair, dust mites and molds. One of the methods of treating an allergy is just avoiding the things that cause it. For instance, try to keep your home free of dust and pet dander. When the air is pollinated switch on the air conditioner. Air conditioners filter allergens, but don’t forget to clean the filters from time to time.
If you don’t know the cause of your allergy consult your doctor. With the help of medications you will be able to lessen the symptoms.
For instance, decongestants eliminate redness but they don’t treat the cause, they just treat the symptom.
Cell stabilizers and antihistamines also eliminate redness, but antihistamines are used for immediate relief while cell stabilizers are for long-lasting relief.
