Symptoms Of Smoking Allergy :: By Kristina
17/12/09
Smoking does not merely harm smokers but also those around them. Children and infants, the elderly, people with a history of allergies and people exposed to heavy smoke for long periods of time are more prone to developing smoke allergy.
In fact, smoke is not an allergen, but an irritant. A great deal of toxic chemicals and irritants in cigarette smoke can cause a cigarette smoke allergy.
The following symptoms of a smoke allergy can be identified.
- If you rub your eyes frequently, while your eyes are watery and burn, and you feel itchy, you may be experiencing a smoke allergy.
- Constant sneezing is another symptom of smoke allergy. This is mainly because smoking irritates nasal passages.
- As a result of the exposure to the smoke you might experience shortness of breath presenting as a wheeze. This is particularly dangerous for people suffering from asthma.
- Another major symptom is coughing. As the smoke enters your lungs while you are breathing, it causes a reaction in the bronchial tubes and air sacs of your lungs. Your body starts expelling it by coughing.
- Headache is also regarded a symptom of a smoke allergy.
Other symptoms of smoke allergy include nasal congestion, a runny nose and a post-nasal drip.
In case you are allergic to smoke, install an air purifier in your home to remove toxic substances from the air you breathe. Also make sure to avoid smokers and smoking environments.
Consider alternative treatment options, such as homeopathy or acupuncture for your smoke allergy. Take over-the-counter allergy remedies if your allergy becomes aggravated. Antihistamines to combat nasal and sinus congestion may sometimes prove to be effective.
