Anorexia: Effects On Your Health“I’m terribly fat! I need to lose weight! Now!” A young woman, standing in front of mirror may be thinking when she sees a fat girl looking at her from the mirror.

In fact she’s terribly thin. Every single bone is visible through her skin. When you look at her, those bones and skin make your flesh creep. But anyway she is sure that she is very fat.

This is the most obvious symptom of physical and mental disorder that is called anorexia or anorexia nervosa. It’s when your weight is at least 15 percent less than it should be normally. And yet people who suffer from anorexia don’t usually understand they have a problem, they think they are very fat and are afraid of gaining weight.

Anorexia causes not only mental problems, but also a change in behavior and way of thinking. It also affects the whole body in various ways:

  • Your brain and nervous system. You become easily irritated, nervous, sad; sometimes it seems to you that you can’t think normally, your memory becomes much worse and your reactions seems to slow down.
  • Your cardiovascular system. Your heart rate slows down or becomes irregular. Your blood pressure falls and you are under risk of having a heart attack. You can also have anemia and other blood disorders.
  • Kidneys and liver. The possibility of having liver disorders, kidney stones and even kidney failure grows.
  • Your hormonal system. Anorexia also affects your hormonal system, so anorectic people also experience a number of hormonal problems, namely problems with growing, difficulties with getting pregnant or bearing at full term.
  • Muscles, joints and bones. Your muscles and joints will become much more weaker, causing different problems. Your bones will become more fragile, because of a lack of important minerals like potassium, magnesium, sodium and others. So, you’ll feel weak not only psychologically, but physically as well.
  • The way you look. Anorexia also affects your appearance, making your hair thin and dull and spoiling the color of your skin. It becomes very vulnerable to bruises and minor injuries, and it will need much more time to recover.

So, anorexia has many negative effects on your health. Don’t follow the fashion trend of being thin and take care of your health. It’s the most precious thing you have.

  1. What you say about anorexia is absolutely spot on – however I also think it is very difficult for any young woman in the midst of the experience to understand what you are saying. To be able to see beyond the here and now. Ironically it is only after she has recovered she is likely to take what you say onboard!
