Atherosclerosis: What Can It Lead To?

Atherosclerosis: What Can It Lead To? Atherosclerosis also known as arteriosclerosis is a common vascular problem. This condition causes the hardening of blood vessels (hardening of arteries) and is one of the leading causes of heart disease. This condition is brought along by the development of plaque in the affected arteries. The plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, and a variety of other substances. If the plaque builds up enough to block significant blood flow to organs this can be the cause of heart disease, kidney disease and a multitude of other medical conditions.

Healthcare professionals have recognized poor (unhealthy) diets, inactive lifestyle, genetic factors and a few others. Healthcare professionals have also identified diabetics, smokers and people with high blood pressure for being at risk of having atherosclerosis. Obesity is also a risk factor for atherosclerosis.

If left unchecked this condition will lead to a variety of health problems which these include cardiovascular issues (such as heart attacks), Cerebrovascular conditions (such as strokes) and peripheral artery disease. If left undiagnosed by healthcare professionals, this condition can have fatal outcomes.

Atherosclerosis is treated using a variety of approaches. These approaches include lifestyle changes: changing your diet, exercising more and reducing daily stress levels. Certain cardiovascular drugs are also used to treat atherosclerosis, these include; beta blockers, AC inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, diuretics (water pills) and other medications. If these treatments are ineffective and the plaques continue to be a cause of heart disease, healthcare professionals may opt for surgical treatment. These procedures will establish blood flow to the organs affected by atherosclerosis.
