Chronic hepatitis is a fairly common condition during which the liver is chronically inflamed. This condition is caused by a few different types of diseases. If left untreated infectious diseases, chronic alcoholism, and autoimmune diseases are the most common types of diseases that cause chronic hepatitis.
Viral diseases (hepatitis B and hepatitis C) are the most common infectious diseases that can lead chronic hepatitis. If left unchecked, untreated or improperly treated viral diseases have a high probability of becoming a chronic problem. Hepatitis C is one of the most common viral diseases that cause chronic hepatitis.
Excessive alcohol consumption is another leading cause of chronic hepatitis. When the human liver breaks down alcohol a variety of highly toxic chemicals are produced, these chemicals are harmful to the liver. Hepatitis due to alcohol use is most often seen in people who have been long term heavy drinkers.
The long term use of certain medications is also a possible cause of viral hepatitis. Anti-fungal medications, acetaminophen, and some anti-biotic drugs have all been associated with hepatitis. Certain drug combinations increase the probability of these conditions developing. It is important to consult with healthcare professionals before taking any medications.
Autoimmune hepatitis is another cause of chronic hepatitis. During this condition your body’s immune system mistakenly targets and attacks its own liver. The causes of this condition are not entirely clear to healthcare professionals.
Chronic hepatitis is a dangerous condition which can lead to cirrhosis of the liver and liver failure. Both of these conditions can be severely debilitating and may even be fatal.
