Red Wine And HealthIs drinking red wine good or bad?

Wine has certain health benefits, if you drink it moderately. What does it mean? In the US, doctors recommend one glass of wine for women and two–for men. In the UK and Europe, it’s two or three glasses for women and three or four glasses for men.

Red wine is rich in antioxidants (mostly reservatrol that is found in the skins and seeds of grapes). Red wine contains more antioxidants than the white one. Why? The reason is that the seeds and skins of grapes are removed early when making white wine.

The antioxidants in wine fight the dangerous substances in your organism and prevent cancer and heart attacks. Wine also lowers cholesterol and blood pressure. Each antioxidant has a certain function though they all neutralize dangerous cells.

  • Heart diseases. Reservatrol keeps the blood cells from sticking to each other and consequently prevents blood clots and heart blockage. So the blood functions properly, and this lessens the chances of heart diseases and strokes. Reservatrol balances nitric oxide–a gas that allows muscles to relax. So the blood flows easily, and this also prevents heart attacks. Red wine also contains another antioxidant–flavanol–which also prevents heart problems.
  • Cholesterol and blood pressure. Cholesterol hardens your arteries and can increase your blood pressure. And reservatrol and other antioxidants decrease the level of cholesterol in human body.
  • Cancer. Reservatrol lessens the chances of DNA mutations (which can lead to cancer), it also prevents the tumor formation. Reservatrol can destroy some cancer sells, too, and also prevent their growth. Guercetin in red wine is quite effective in preventing lung cancer.

By the way, the studies have shown that French wines (for instance, French “Paradox”) have greater health effects than German wines.

So drink a glass of wine daily to be healthy and prevent certain diseases.

But remember not to drink too much so not to harm your health! Excessive drinking of wine can bring to liver diseases, stomach ulcers, arrhythmia (irregular heartbeats) and many other health problems.
