Spinach: Vegetable For WinnersMany of us have watched Popeye the Sailor Man — a famous cartoon hero that eats spinach every time he gets in trouble, thus becoming stronger and being able to handle his problems. Actually, the benefits of spinach weren’t exaggerated in the cartoon: spinach really is very good for your health.

Spinach is low in calories, but it supplies your organism with lots of useful minerals and vitamins, making your body stronger and more enduring.

Spinach is rich in calcium, iron, iodine, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, sulfur, zinc, choline, inositol, folic acid, Vitamin K, Vitamin C and many other nutritional vitamins. Let’s see what kind of health benefits do these vitamins and minerals give us.

First of all, spinach is good for your cardiovascular system: it keeps your arteries elastic and healthy, thus preventing atherosclerosis. It is also very good for the quality of your blood and can prevent anemia. Spinach normalizes your blood pressure and reduces the level of sugar in your blood, preventing or easing diabetes. So, to sum up all this, we can say with confidence that spinach helps to prevent a number of heart and vascular diseases.

Spinach is also known as a good antioxidant that helps prevent cancer, especially colon, lung and breast cancers. At least 13 antioxidant agents in spinach  has been discovered.

Spinach will help to calm your nervous system and fight against some nervous diseases and insomnia. Research has shown that spinach is good for your eyes, too: its compounds help to prevent cataracts and degeneration of eye muscles. It’s not a secret that spinach also makes your bones stronger.

Spinach is also good for your appearance, since it has anti-aging properties. It also helps to get rid of skin problems and, thanks to the iodine that is present in it, makes your immune system stronger. Used externally (put on a painful or burned area), spinach can relieve burns.

Spinach is strongly recommended for children and pregnant women. But people with hepatitis and gastric problems should use spinach cautiously.

I guess it is not mere chance that the secret of Popeye’s strength and success is hidden in spinach. Make sure you add some spinach — fresh or even frozen — to your meals and you’ll become strong and healthy. Just like Popeye the Sailor Man.
