The Global Effects Of Alcoholism :: By Hunter
30/01/10
“Unlike smokers, I don’t hurt other people, I hurt only myself.” This is what most of the alcohol-addicts say.
But are they right? Let’s see what effects does alcohol abuse have on the one who drinks and on the world around him.
1. Your health. When you drink a little amount of alcohol, it warms you up and may have some positive effect. When you drink it again and again your organism gets used to it, and some processes in your brain begin to change. You become dependent, you feel you can’t live without drinking. Your behavior also changes, and definitely not to the positive side.
Though, inadequate behavior isn’t the only thing that you will obtain. Problems with liver and cardiovascular system, strokes and many other problems may also occur. Banal, but a fact.
2. Your family. Alcohol addiction has a serious impact on your family too. Children of alcoholic parents are usually born with health problems and birth defects. Even if they are born more or less healthy, they later become more vulnerable to different deceases, not to mention the psychological problems and their poor performance at school.
3. The society. Most of Americans have at least one beloved person who has drinking or drug problem. Plus, most of the murders, thefts and other crimes are committed for or because of alcohol and drugs.
So, it’s not a problem of one person or even one family. It’s a problem for the whole society, since the number of such families is very big and it continues to grow from year to year.
4. Economy. According to the report of The National Institute on Drug abuse and alcoholism, in the US $67 billion per year is indirectly spent on alcohol and drugs (namely on hospital care after accidents because of driving drunk or under the influence of drugs, on treatment in drug rehabs, rehabilitation after alcohol and drug abuse and so on).
So, we see that alcoholism and other addictions don’t concern only the addicted person. They also affect his family, the society and the whole country as well. Start today, change your attitude to drinking, apply to an alcohol rehab, and this will make your and your family’s life much better. It will also be your small contribution to make the surrounding world better.
