Have Blissful Sleep :: By Anna
11/09/09
It is not a secret that healthy sleep is a major part of a healthy lifestyle. Along with proper diet and exercise getting adequate sleep is an important part of maintaining optimal health and well being. However, the truth is that nowadays one out of three people suffers from insomnia, which is more common among women.
Although insomnia is not defined as a disease the truth is that it affects our immune system and therefore our well being. It results in weakness, fatigue, the loss of energy and decreased strength during the day.
Insomnia may be caused by such problems as tension, stress, anxiety, pain, illness, depression or a sudden change in lifestyle. There are three levels of insomnia lasting from several days to years. Certainly, nowadays there is a wide range of medications for insomnia treatment, most of them being sedatives. Sedatives are mainly used for stress or depression treatment and, therefore, also for insomnia treatment.
However, all these medications are recommended for short-term use, since they may result in psychological dependence. Apart from the medications your sleep hygiene should always be under control.
Thus, there are a number of natural sleeping aids to enhance your nighttime rest. Daily physical exercise for at least half an hour and a walk before your bedtime will not only keep you in good shape but will also guarantee your good quality sleep.
Meditation, yoga, dimmed lighting, soothing music, relaxation videos and a relaxing massage before bedtime are excellent tips for insomnia treatment. A warm bath with bath salts is also a means of relaxation therapy. A healthy diet is one of the natural sleep aids, too. Eat protein-rich food such as milk, potatoes, nuts and whole-wheat bread. Calcium, magnesium and zinc, vitamins B6, B3 and C or herb tea have relaxing effects and therefore are good for treating insomnia. Don’t drink caffeinated beverages late in the afternoon, and don’t consume alcohol before bedtime.
Smoking before bedtime will also disturb your sleep. Lying on your back with your head pointing northward will also help you fall asleep. However, in case you cannot sleep count up to hundred with your head pointing to the north. If this won’t help you either leave your bed and go to another room. Do not force yourself into bed.
Bear in mind that if you follow all these simple tips good quality sleep together with your healthy lifestyle and well being will be guaranteed.
