Overcoming Pregnancy Insomnia :: By Emma
26/01/10
Pregnancy is one of the most memorable moments in a woman’s life. However, the period of expecting a baby may have some problems. One of them is a sleep disorder called pregnancy insomnia.
Are you worried about the upcoming childbirth. Do you want to go to the bathroom every five minutes, or maybe you have leg spasms? These are the reasons that keep you awake all night long.
Here are some tips for pregnancy insomnia treatment:
First, air out the bedroom before sleep, but just for a few minutes. You are too vulnerable to the cold now and may get ill. If you have time, you may go for a walk outside.
When you come back, make your bed as comfortable as possible. Try to place a large, soft pillow under your abdomen.
Choosing the correct position is extremely important for good sleep. If you sleep lying only on one side, preferably on the left, it will not put pressure on your diaphragm. Remember, never sleep on your back, especially if your abdomen is already quite big.
It’s so natural for pregnant women eat a lot, because they have to feed not only themselves, but the baby as well. But try to avoid eating before sleep, because you risk having sleepless nights with spasms in your stomach.
And if you have frequent spasms anyway, put your legs in the bath with some warm water and massage your feet and shins. If it’s hard for you to bend down, you may rub one foot with the help of the other, or ask your husband to do that for you. After this “spa” procedure, put on socks even if it is obviously warm in the house.
Don’t forget about breathing exercises. Breath in and out, but do it very slowly and deeply. It will help to ease the pain.
Also try to drink less water so you won’t have constant desires to go to the bathroom.
You should also forget about cigarettes, alcohol and coffee. They are so harmful for the child. Plus they will keep you awake all night long.
Before sleep take a warm bath with lavender oil, which is very relaxing. After the procedure, drink a cup of warm milk with honey. Don’t deny yourself this pleasant treatment. After it, you will have another pleasant gift — dreams. Also listen to some relaxing music. I’m sure your baby will like it.
Try to ignore any kind of stresses and worries. Now you should care about nothing but your baby. So, sweet mummy, relax and have sweet dreams.
